Scoring Questions

Scoring questions are questions that carry a different weighting depending on the answer selected by a candidate. This allows eligible candidates to be ranked according to their level of suitability based on their responses to scoring questions.

Answers for scoring question are assigned a number of points. The higher the number of points assigned to an answer the higher the score the candidate receives for selecting that answer. The total number of points for a question cannot exceed 100 points. For example, consider the sample question below:

A possible score for each answer to the question could be as follows:

  • Answer A = 60 points

  • Answer B= 30 points

  • Answer C= 10 points

An answer can have a weighting of 0 and multiple answers can have the same weighting. For example, the sample question shown above could be scored as follows:

  • Answer A = 40 points

  • Answer B= 40 points

  • Answer C= 0 points

The total number of points for a question can be less than 100 points. Where a question allows selection of multiple answers, the score for that question is the sum of the points for each selected answer.

How are Scores Calculated?

When a candidate completes a questionnaire, the system calculates the following:

  • total score for each questionnaire page

  • total percentage score for each questionnaire page

  • total score for the entire questionnaire

  • total percentage score for the entire questionnaire.

For example, a questionnaire consists of two pages. The first page consists of four questions each weighted at 100 points. The second page consists of two questions whereby one question is weighted at 100 points and the other question is weighted at 80 points.

For the first page, the candidate scores 100 points for three of the questions and 60 points for the remaining question. This means the candidate has scored a total of 360 points out of a possible 400 points for the page. This equates to a percentage score of 90% for the page.

For the second page, the candidate scores 50 points and 70 points for the two questions respectively. This means the candidate has scored a total of 120 points out of a possible 180 points for the page. This equates to a percentage score of 67% for the page.
The candidate therefore scored a total of 480 points out of a possible 580 points for the entire questionnaire. This equates to a percentage total of 83% for the entire questionnaire.

Note that if a scoring question is not mandatory and a candidate does not select an answer to the question, the question still counts towards the total score for the page. That is, the candidate effectively scores 0 out of the total available points for that question.

How are the Scores Applied and Displayed?

A referral workflow channel called Scores is available within the Referral Workflow Maintenance utility in Recruitment Manager. The Scores channel has a number of sub-channels for the following score ranges:

0-20%

21-40%

41-60%

61-80%

81-100%

Each of these sub-channels can be mapped to a different referral workflow stage. When a candidate completes a questionnaire, the system calculates the candidate's percentage total score for the entire questionnaire. The system then determines which of the sub-channels the candidate's score falls within and moves the candidate to the referral workflow stage mapped to that sub-channel.

For example, if the 81-100% sub-channel is mapped to a referral workflow stage called Shortlisted, a candidate who scores a percentage total of 83% would be moved to the referral workflow stage of Shortlisted.

Note that knockout actions that apply to a candidate take precedence over that candidate's score. If a candidate is rejected based on an answer to a knockout question, the candidate does not enter a referral workflow stage regardless of the score received. If the candidate is not rejected but qualifies for a knockout stage, the candidate moves to the relevant knockout stage within the referral workflow rather than being channelled into referral workflow stage based on the score. However the candidate’s score is displayed next to the candidate’s name within the knockout stage of the referral workflow. This allows candidates in the knockout stage to be ranked according to their scores.

Which Question Types can be Scoring Questions?

Scores can be applied to questions with the following answer types:

  • numeric

  • yes/no

  • value list

  • date.

Only one answer can be scored for each numeric and date question. Multiple scores of various weights can be applied to yes/no and value list questions.
